Private Instruction

Throughout my career, I have been very fortunate to have numerous teachers who are not only masters in their craft, but in the act of teaching. As such, engaging, thorough, and effective teaching has had a prominent place in my musical life.

As a teacher, I see myself as a guide for each student’s personal journey of discovery and growth. I firmly believe that the best way to achieve meaningful learning is for a student to make their own realizations, rather than dogmatic or rote instruction. To be an effective teacher, I do my best to provide the information and environment to facilitate these discoveries.

As far as the content of my teaching, take the example of an architect: no matter what type of building we want to construct, all must start out with a solid foundation. I emphasize proven and effective fundamentals of playing in order to quickly boost ability in a way that will serve students in the long run.

My enthusiasm for teaching stems from the line of inspiring teachers I have had myself and institutions I have been a part of. Though a native of northern Kentucky, I received my Master of Music in Clarinet Performance (with Distinction) from DePaul University in 2021 and my Bachelor’s degree in Clarinet Performance (Summa Cum Laude) from the University of North Texas in 2019. During my education, I have taken multiple courses in musical pedagogy and have taught both privately and in public institutions in Illinois, Kentucky, and Texas (check out my bio for more details!). My primary teachers are Julie DeRoche, Kimberly Cole Luevano, and Jeffrey Carwile.

I hope that you are as excited to continue your musical journey as I am to help! Please enjoy the rest of this website, and never hesitate to get in touch!

Music Theory and History Tutoring

The better we understand the music we play, the better we can perform it! Knowledge of music theory, or how music is constructed, and music history give us the tools we need to do exactly this.

These subject areas are also the basis of a university music education. If you are…

  • a current college student who would like to improve your skills in these classes

  • a high school student planning to pursue music in college who would like a head start

  • curious about getting a deeper understanding of the music you love

…then tutoring may be just what you are looking for!

I currently work as part of the music theory faculty at The People’s Music School (Chicago, IL), and with both a Master’s and Bachelor’s degree in music performance, music theory and history have comprised a large part of my education. With the award-winning faculty at both the University of North Texas and DePaul University, I have completed extensive work in both subjects, with specific focus in analysis, 18th-century counterpoint, and the histories of woodwind instruments, the wind band, and jazz.

If you may be interested, please feel free to get in contact! I would love to get the chance to work together, share what I have learned, and work towards your goals!
